We have heard a lot about winning and losing this past week!!  With our football team taking us to the final of the Euros – some say that is a great success for ‘us’ as a team – even though we didn’t go the whole way. What do you think? You think you have to win for it to count or we should be proud of the achievement for what it was?

Some of you can see a word like ‘success’ as being undesirable in some way, perhaps a bit crass or instantly linking it with money and finances, those things that Nurses shouldn’t want..

The Cambridge dictionary defines ‘success’ as:

‘the achieving of desired results, or someone or something that achieves positive results’

So I ask myself

‘Am I successful?’

‘What does success look like for me?’

‘Do I strive for success?’

‘Does it matter?’

For me, success is about achieving my goals and desires. At this age I seem to set them more proactively than I did when I was younger – not sure why that is. Perhaps a heightened awareness of time.

On that basis I am successful, I set goals, I work towards them and invariably I achieve them. If I don’t it’s usually because I’ve moved the goals…..they are my goals after all, it is my prerogative to move them right?!

Setting goals gives me hope and energy, achieving them gives me a buzz.  Failing to achieve? Well there’s always something to be learned or a change in perspective that helps me manage that side.

Success does matter to me because it improves my sense of wellbeing and worth. As long as I focus my goals on me and not as a way of measuring up with others, I’m in a good place!

P.S if you need help with setting goals drop me a message and let’s make it happen.
